所以while既可表示主句与从句的动作同时发生,也可表示“在...期间”发生.
而且注意这里从句的时态特征并不明显,现在分词短语并不一定表示正在进行,也可以表示某种状态.
所以这里:
He listened to the music while cleaning the room.在打扫屋房间期间,他在听音乐
He was listening to the music while cleaning the room.他一边听着音乐一边打扫房间.
都是正确的,只是表达的意义不同.

这只是个个人爱好问题，其实都是可以的，不用这么苛刻，while只是个连词，在这里表示当的意思，不用看到while和when就一定要用进行时态，用过去时并不犯法错误，不用这么纠结。。

这是固定的，后面用while连接的时候，主句不用现在进行时
如果是when，则相反

在他打扫屋子的时候在听音乐,
