顺便问下：1,the party then searched the whole cave thoroughly but did not find anything except the empty tin trunk.为什么but前面不用加逗号?
2,yesterday the firemen examined the ground carefully ,but were not able to find any broken glass.为什么but前面要加逗号?
这两句话都是新概念第二册上的,怎么看都看不出来有什么不同,但为什么一个要加逗号,一个不加逗号,纠结死了!第1句是55课,第2句是53课

the leader【主语】 of the party【介词短语作定语修饰leader】 was examining【谓语,过去进行时】 the soil【宾语】 near the entrance【介词短语作定语修饰soil】 to the cave【介词短语作定语修饰entrance】 when【引导时间状语从句】 the machine【状语从句的主语】 showed【状语从句的谓语,过去时】 that【连词引导宾语从句】 there was【there be 结构,过去时】 gold【宾语从句的主语】 under the ground【介词短语作宾语从句的主语补语】.
but作连词,连接两个完整句子时,要加逗号.但是连接一句之内的两个并列成分时,不需要加逗号.
1、but连接两个并列的谓语短语,因为不是连接两个整句,
2、其实这句真和上句没有区别,但是可以认为but后面是一个省略了主语they的完整句子,这样加逗号就有道理了.
