应该是前者正确,这个不存在是主动还是被动的关系.
有些特殊词组作状语一般是结构固定的,
比如你给出的例子“Comparing to Mary”做前置状语就是错误的,
应该改成“Compared with Mary”(没有道理,习惯用法）
类似的还有一个"Gennerally speaking"意为“通常来说”它做这种状语时
就不能换成“Gennerally spoken"或是其他的.
结构是它做了伴随状语.
